By 2020 it is likely that universities
will need to reimagine both the physical and virtual learning environment, as
well as personalisation of the curriculum
What might learning look like in higher education in 2020? : A possible
scenario
For the 21st
century student, learning involves a blend of the physical and virtual
environments. Education paradigms have shifted to ‘include online learning,
hybrid learning and collaborative models’ (Johnson et al., 2012, p.17).
Meaningful active learning interactions can occur face-to-face where today's
institutions have been remodelled to suit 21st century learning, complementary
to the learning approaches of the new super-connected tertiary student. Learners engage with synchronous and
asynchronous online environment and use self-directed learning involving
interactive, mobile and web-enabled and social learning experiences.
